Eddie

take pipe throw rope down end to other end (suction side) tie on a piece of 1 1/2 hose to rope pull in to pipe about 3 ft and tie rope off at discharge end

put suction side in water, connect hose to portable pump set up like normal

start pump this will produce venturie effect in pipe (like a shallow well jet pump for a house well)

I will try and sketch some thing too

I did google it but noting simple came up.

Jim,

I did that once and it was $50 a day for the same sized pump. I'd think a larger one would cost more, but I don't think I have enough water in my creek to pull allot more water from it. Five days will equal what it would cost to just buy the pump. A week will be equal to what the pump and hoses will cost.

Having the pump will be usefull in the future too, so I think buying is better than renting.

Thanks,
Eddie

I can see your point, I didn't realize you may have a use for it in the future, I would rather buy than rent but owning is maintenance, upkeep, storage and will it run when ya need it?

Have you calculated the fuel cost for this. At $2 a gallon, a 15 gallon tank a day would cost you $30 are day or $900 dollars per month. This starts to swamp the cost of the pump and engine. My 16 horsepower generator uses about .75 gallons per hours at light load. This would increase a lot under full load. So my estimated cost above may be way too low.

Bob,

From what I've read, I figure one gallon will last me three hours, so I'll need 8 gallons of fuel a day. Give or take a day, I'll need to run it 26 days to fill up my lake. I kind of hope that I'll get some rain in there and not run it the full time, but just in case I do, that means it will cost me $416. I'll change the oil and put a new spark plug in about once a week, maybe more, so that will aslo add to the expense.

It's not the smartest thing to do, but I really, really want water in there!!! hahaha

Eddie:

I've been doing some thinking - thats dangerous and almost impossible.

Are the pumps you are looking at so designed that the inoard pump bearing is actually the engine shaft bearing. If so will if replacements are required will it be possible or will you have to repalce the entire unit.

Just for interest the attached site has some engines, pumps etc.
