Ford 1710
I was checking the fan belt tension on the Ford 1710 I bought recently (466 Hours) and I noticed that the fan/pulley assembly was loose. In looking at the shop manual I have to assume the water pump bearing is bad. What puzzles me is that it is not leaking coolant. Thoughts?

Maybe the bolts holding the fan and pulley to the pump are just loose.

The water pump on my 1710 wobbled bad but did not leak. I decided to change it before it did leak and risk engine damage.

Wolfy, how many hours on it when it did this? I decided I am going to go ahead and order parts to rebuild it. Do you know if the O-ring behind the plate is a standard size, or should I order one with the other gaskets?

I got it used with 1,900 hours. It wobbled when I bought it. I have no idea if it had ever been changed before. Instead of rebuilding it, I got one from a dealer. However, I have since also changed the water pump on the 1600, which was very similar. That one I got online and it was far cheaper. For the low cost I would not bother rebuilding one, but if you do, it would be logical to change all of the gaskets and O rings.

i got an aftermarket one for my 1710 many years ago and it has held up just fine. i don't remember if mine leaked when it busted. it just stopped turning and started burning the belt up.

Changed mine (1700, but think it's the same pump) last weekend @ just over 2,000 hours because it was dripping out the weep hole. There was no bearing wobble yet. I do have to say that was the easiest water pump change i have ever done in my entire life. Almost a pleasure compared to some I've done :) Also found on line for much less $$ than dealership.

I ended up by an entirely new water pump at a local tractor dealer for about $110. Fortunately they carry a pretty good stock of Ford/New Holland Parts even though they seem to sell more Kubotas than anything else.

That is a good price, actually. The aftermarket units like mine from Ebay range from $75 to $100. And it is probably blue, where mine is grey.
