My Grandparents lived on a farm, and they got their water from a dug well, or cistern, that was filled by rainwater from the roof of the house. The only treatment was a charcoal filter between the roof and the well. The water was retrieved with an apparatus that had a series of small buckets on a chain, and turned by a hand crank. I can't recall what they called it though.

Sanitary wise, it left something to be desired. I cleaned it out once, and it wasn't pleasant.
