The Kinetico part of your system that uses salt is non electric & meter driven your original question no water used no salt used . you have what looks like a separate pre & post filter system the regeneration you hear at 1 am is likely your pre treatment possibly Green sand filter your post treatment is likely activated carbon. if your water seems good no rust etc all is good its working

No, the water is horrible. softner worked fine, even throughout the couple different month long trips I've had while out of town for work. The water Very hard feeling, not slippery like it was. Smells like iron, not the sulfer smell my buddies well has, it Tastes like complete ***, getting rust in everything. showers, toliets, dishes, ****, even the dog water bowl has rust stains in it. something isn't right, it doesn't use any salt and hasn't in months. something isn't right and I haven't had time to mess with it yet.

You might be better to bite the bullet & call a service tech these systems have lots of small parts It is likely a simple fix. Have a Technican explain the system to you completley

It is timer based, I want to upgrade to a meter because it is just me in this large house. I don't use enough water to have it regenerated ever night at 1am.

I have a 10 year old sears unit that I got on clearance for $150. It was meter based, but that part malfunctioned and it started to recharge every night.

Now I just leave it unplugged and I just force it to recharge (there is a "recharge now" button) every 3 weeks or so- whenever I can feel that the water is starting to get hard.

Hiya,

I had the same issue with my system about 2 years back, not using any salt and the water was horrible. Turns out that one of the 2 slider valves in the brine timer unit stuck in the bypass position and as a result the timer gears stripped and the pellets were never regenerated. The best option for me was to simply replace the entire timer unit as the more we looked into it, the more we found wrong with it. Cost about $400 for a new timer head and assorted other small parts, been running great since then. I also add rust-out with every bag.
