RO systems for house hold use are no where comparable to RO systems used for industries. I use a RO filter system for our drinking water for taste. RO systems can also hibernate bacteria if not kept clean, even an high pressure system used for industry may need pickled once in a while.
Iron from a well needs to be treated different in water softeners depending on. Is in soluable form? Is it already oxidized? If oxidized you could plug softener before its time. Prefilter before softener regardless, especially on a home well.
