If it's just for filling a pond you could keep it simple and use a manual switch.

Looking at similar and prices are 25k and up... well drillers are booked solid here and basically can name their price... good thinking to get it done when you did.

Had to do it then because the house was being installed in Aug 2005. Well had to be operational to get an occupancy permit from the county.

For once my timing worked out OK since the real estate market bubble was still inflating in May 2005 so the cost of the well was pretty reasonable and the CA drought was 5 years in the future. Wish all of my stock picks worked out as well. Oh well, win some, lose some and you can't take it with you.

A 70 gallon tank would be mostly water hammer control on a 7-1/2 HP system . A variable frequency, variable rpm drive will allow some control during low flow demand.
Flipping a manual switch on a pump and walking away is a potential for problems . A timer will at least shut the pump off if you forget or if kids are tinkering with it .

There are several variable speed down well pumps out there that do not require pressure tanks. In your neck of the woods there are probably several dozen irrigation system experts. Have them design a system out for you to set it up correctly. If your well driller does this too, sit down with him and get the layout he recommends and will stand behind.

I have a Monro 3 HP pump that will do 60 GPM at 60PSI at 25 foot of lift, so 7.5 sounds a bit much, however are you looking at a down well pump, or topside lift pump?

Also many irrigation pumps can pump a less GPM up to a point. In my case I have a lower limit of 5 GPM before cavitation, then my pressure switch will kick it off.

PS it is critical that you install a low pressure cut off, so if things go dry you don't burn the pump impeller up.
