Thanks for all of the advise, although there hasn't been a
problem since i posted. I am also concerned with the
septic system, and feel that if I change the well system,
and nobody has to conserve, then maybe the septic
system will be next. I think I am going to try the ogre
approach and try to have them be watchful of when they
use water. My first indication of this was when the water softerner
installer told me that he loaded the salt pellets in the system and
i should be ok for 3 months... and that in 6 weeks i had to buy more
salt for the system. I know usage is high, and I am working on that.
A new washer sounds incredibly efficient, but with the price of a softener,
along with a heavy boat repair this summer, finances just aren't there
right now for that. Maybe next year!
We already schedule the dishwasher to run overnite, although I beleive
that uses less water than washing by hand!
If it happens again, I am going to have to impose some restrictions on
who can do what and when. (20 min showers are wasteful in my eyes)
I like the shutoff swich idea! 10 mins, or you don't get to rinse!

On a side note,
years ago in a small house I rented, the landlord lived across the street.
He ran a water line to this house, I think only 1/2 inch.
Then, a neighbor needed water, so they "T"d into the line
just before the house, and she got a line going to her house, which
was a bit lower elevation from my house.
well, when she ran laundry, or any combination of 2 uses at once,
our water became a trickle.. made for some soapy end to showers,
and bitter conversations with new wife at the time and the neighbor!

the type of problem you have dosent depend on well type.
It sounds like a "pump/tank issue.

The pump shouldent start every time you turn on a faucet if you have a tank in the system.

If you have a galvinized tank it is probibbly waterlogged.
If its a bladder tank it might have a leak in bladder and would be have to be replaced.

Galvinized should be only 1/2 full of water the rest of air.
Try shutting pump off at breaker drain down the whole system including tank at drain below tank, open a cold water faucet at higest spot in house to let air in drain until all system is empty (it might gurggle as tank empies wait until it stopsrunning).

Shut of all valves and turn pump back on. see if it will work with presure switch.
