@Furu I like your response and can see your reasons for wanting to do it yourself, but I still think the risks involved would lead me to paying somebody else.

All jobs have their own expertise requirement to do them easily, more importantly safely, and involving another person, no matter how competent at other matters, increases the risk exponentially because he does not have direct access to your brain whilst undergoing the task involved.

If it was a one man job then I would be inclined to say go with your own ideas, but when it needs somebody else, I have always been reluctant to tackle such jobs ever since my father became too old to be the other man.

We have all seen pictures or heard of "widow maker" trees, but there are many more widow makers out there than most folks will ever come across.

Easy for me to say, despite frequently not having the cash spare to pay other folks to do jobs, but I think this is definitely one I would not tackle myself despite 60 odd years of farming around the world on my own.

I heard a very wise man give a homeowner some advice on pulling/servicing his own well. He said - find the company you want to do business with - ask them how much they will charge to retrieve your pump and drop pipe once you have screwed up. You will find that the list is MUCH shorter than if you allow the company do do the job from the start. Many will not be set up to handle this type job. The cost will be substantially higher.
