If you have a water well one important item you should consider is a sediment filter before the water heater. When my oil fired water heater starts to heat the water, it sounds like there is someone in there banging on the side of the tank. I had no idea as to what was causing it and called the manufacturer in Canada. They immediately knew the reason. The heater had been filling up with sediment and even though I was draining off the bottom of the tank, the bottom drain didn't come off the very bottom. It is located about 2" above the bottom. This is where the sediment is and there is no way to remove it. They told me that it is like a "stone" at the bottom. The only way to eliminate the problem is to replace the water heater. I now have a new water heater and just have to find the time to install it. The old one is a Aro 40 gallon and the new one is a Bock oil fired 75 gallon unit. There is no way will we ever run out of hot water again!!!!!!! This time, I am also installing a sediment filter in the main line and another in the water heater supply line. The reason for the filter in the main line is that after finding that my water softener is no longer working, I find that there is a lot of sediment in the resin bed clogging it. The picture is the one that is going in the water line to the water heater. It is the largest one that I could find with a disposable filter cartridge.

Agreed, I installed a sediment filter before going to the 'house' side (softener, etc) but after the branch for the outdoor water. That way, I don't waste filter capacity on my wifes fixation with watering everything (I swear - she'd be good at growing rice!).

One thing to look out for, though: Its best to pipe the softener, heater, etc., at 3/4", even if you branch out at 1/2". Most all of the filters with 3/4" fittings have 1/2" holes in an out of the filter. Because I couldn't find a 1" filter (which, it turns out, has a 3/4 hole), I put two 3/4" (i.e. 1/2") in parallel.

And I piped a bypass, which makes changing the filter cartriges much quicker and less messy, because you don't have to depressurize, or empty the upstream pipes.

Maybe I over plumb things, sometimes ....

I did the same with the parallel filters.

My Omnifilters (available at all the box stores) have a bypass function in the filter housing.

Ditto for everything said here. Make sure you buy a brand that has the filters available at a reasonable cost because that's the long term expense. I have to replace ours every 1-2 weeks. I bought a Sears unit but it uses a filter that I can buy at Farm and Fleet (like TSC in this area) for about $1.50 each. I've seen these things as expensive as five or 6 bucks. Also, you can choose different filter sizes. I use the large size, which I think is 40 microns. I found that the smaller ones plugged up with rust almost immediately and didn't do any better with taking out the sediment. I guess if you don't have a rust problem it wouldn't matter.

hi guys:
yes we built many of these for family & friends, I soldered up a bunch of copper, with dual filters using the same type as posted above. with shut off valves so one can be changed while the others running... I made one for myself with two in parrallel, only with single shut off valves as keeping it going wasn't much of a problem stopping water for a few min while they get changed, I made mine using inexpensive PVC while some others I made with copper and sweating them together (what a masterpiece!) /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif using double sized filters and dual sides with dual filters, so a sediment filter and a carbon filter are in-line with each other and has dual circuits so there is one in parrallel too! here is where we buy our spray & water stuff from. ( forgot the name of the place I'llpost back, as you can buy 24" long filters by the case and the filter housing are about same price as the standard ones shown above!) here is other one too.
