Watermelon

In my garden this morning I found an ****** melon that had been rolled around and was about a foot from where it was yesterday. There were no signs of scratching or biting on it, but there were 'coon tracks all around. I suppose they could have just been rolling it around from curiosity. Knock on wood, I have not lost a single melon to 'coons this year. We've had over a dozen really nice ****** melons and have 8-10 more on the vines. They've been great to eat and share with family and neighbors.

This is our crop of watermelon :licking:.
We are located much further North than the Northern States of the USA on a Globe, but still it's possible to grow them at the open air over here. We've got 12 units from 10 seeds.

Good looking melons you have there. The Gulf Stream is bringing you the warmer weather. {you're welcome}

Larro, permanent Asian cold anticyclones seem passed away. But it looks not forever ...
The Gulf Stream gives us and our plants some kind of different breath, and we appreciate that much :).

...Now if you plant seeds from just about anything, it is not going to be the same fruit. ....

That's why you have to check the packaging to see if they are hybrids or not. Hybrids almost never breed true; you get one or the other parent stock. (For instance, most corn are hybrids, second generation seed you'll be lucky to get half the crop to match the original.)

On the other hand, heirloom seeds are never (well, not supposed to be) hybrids and will breed true.

Dr, that was a while back, but I think I was talking about planting saved seeds from bought fruits and veggies. Which is what I did with my melons this year. One of the four kinds I planted were worth the trouble. The seeds were marked, Long, Green Good. They turned out to be short, green but still good.
