My first guess would be the solenoid, but there may be a problem in the switch too. A few minutes with a multimeter checking connections will tell you.

I don't know how hard the starter is to remove, but you might start by pulling the starter and solenoid and see if you can replicate the problem in a less threatening situation. Then you can troubleshoot the switch vs. the solenoid.
