'They' have to want to find you. And once they do, all traces of you will disappear and you wouldn't be able to warn your fellow TBN members.

Guess I have more to worry about than my shadow. Sure glad I'm taking that course in Russian. Just think how much foreign interference is making our lives miserable. Serves us right for being targets.
Yrah, we have already had a few disappear without a trace.

You can't hide anyways. I wouldn't dare guess how many cameras we go past over the course of a day. When you get gas at most places you are on camera. Drive past an ATM machine, they may be able to pick you out. Many traffic control lights have cameras, to say nothing of all of the dash cams out there today. Many public buildings have cameras... if somebody wants to find you bad enough it's going to happen. I don't like it, yet prefer not to lose sleep over things I can't control.

Not so, with the ability to use Uber and a flip-phone. There is a movement called the GRAY MAN. It's been around since the 2010 and a little prior.

A TV series called Person of Interest woke many people up to this Matrix we all live in now. Some just live in a deeper monitored state than others.

I take some solace in how labor intensive reviewing security camera footage is. It is mind numbing unless you know the approximate time of an event. And know who or what to look for. Former employer had over 100 cameras installed and I had access on my office PC. The novelty wore off quick. I suspect facial recognition software on a large scale is reserved for governments and Hollywood. For now anyway.

Tell us more about how to get started with Tasmota!

Being Old School (and having been responsible for information security audits in the ancient world) my use of Smart technology is limited to outdoor lighting to see wildlife and the light I need to back the tractor into its barn stall. Hacking those would be harmless. Nothing else is 'Smart'. I'm not in a hurry to jump into the 21st century beyond this lighting until I have more control over where the data goes.

No Facebook here, WhatsAp only at the demand of my kids. And of course the 'Google knows all' inherent in web access is inescapable.

Tasmota sounds interesting!
Hacking those might be just the thing. Reflash the firmware or just add a little extra code and use it to do something it wasn't intended to do, like being a node on a botnet or DOS attack. "They" rent your gear out for a little bitcoin.

That must be happening somewhere.

I think it was a Tuya ("Smart") table lamp switch or something that a user identified as uploading a huge amount of data hours after he went to bed. He threw it in the trash without investigating farther. Mining bitcoins? Botnet mass attack?

Anything is possible after you give Tuya access to your router.

I think 'best practices' is button down each pc for no sharing anything, Public Network, before allowing Tuya to access it. Is it possible to secure phones and Guests similarly?

I have IoT network/vlan where i put stuff. The things in it only have access to specific host on the Internet and not access to other local networks. Not fool proof, but if somehow something on it gets hacked, it probably won't be able to connect to command/control.

Thanks to information provided by this thread I shut down ALEXA.

Just now i saw a picture of a microphone swaying seductively above my screen. Wanting to see why it was there with Alexa off, I tapped on it. A message appeared asking permission to turn the microphone back on. Maybe I can physically remove it without bricking my tablet.
