I refuse to live in paranoia.

Does that mean you are going to live with modern technology & not wory about it? Or avoid as much of the big brother stuff as possible?

I'm an IT security professional so paranoia about technology is my job. And just because you are paranoid doesn't mean they aren't out to get you. But you can go way overboard with tinfoil hats or going off the grid entirely.

I like the idea of a 'spiderweb' mounted as high as possible. Toss the lines supporting it over high tree branches or something.

I'll go on record here... Anything in my 400ft airspace had better be mine. Anything within Turkey gun range, 40 to 60 yards, is S.O.L...

In the IT world - there are companies that have been hacked, and companies that don't know they've been hacked. There isn't a third category.

Apply that reasoning to homeowners and just assume your security is wide open. There's nothing else you can credibly assume.

And - today I'm working on creating an IRS logon to see where my second Covid-stimulus payment went. The first was deposited like a tax refund. The second was apparently mailed but all we've seen is a letter to my wife noting hers was mailed. So ... I got all the way through creating accounts for each of us to see our IRS files, then each attempt failed at 'cell phone #'.

'Some prepaid phones aren't acceptable to prove identity to IRS'. I thought $150/month flat rate for 5 phones and free Amazon Prime was a good deal but I think IRS is saying with no use of credit beyond monthly Visa card use, we no longer are verifiable by the credit bureaus. They'll snail-mail the verification code I need. Bah.

Who are "they" that are out to get us?

The list is endless. But generally state sponsored, cyber criminals looking to make a buck, cyber criminals looking to use my gear for other criminal activities or corporations looking to make a buck on my data.

As somebody who use to have a top secret clearance, the Chinese already have every scrap of personal info thanks to the OPM hack a few years ago. At least they will protect what they stole unlike the US government who makes everybody applying for a clearance fill out their identity theft forms.

The last category is only marginally safer than the middle 2, but not by much.
