Thanks for the ideas and the references, guys.
I'll try adjusting the pressure relief valve a bit although I am hesitant to do so without a guage.
I wonder if a small, short cylinder could be mounted under the front of the trailer, pushing vertically and tied in parallel hydraulically. If sized right, it could do the initial lifting at a straight vertical angle for 6" or so and then reach it's end of travel by which point the poorly angled main cylinder would have a chance of operating.
I really feel the proper solution is to lower the frame end of the cylinder several inches to give it a more reasonable starting angle. That would take a pretty beefy bracket and would be a real scary situation if it broke and the bed flopped down
. There has to be tremendous forces on that bracket at the starting angle. I wonder why they don't build the trailers that way in the first place? There is plenty of room underneath to lower the bracket.
I only use the trailer a half dozen times a year. But Monday I made three trips to the yard whereas two would have been enough if the trailer worked with with rated GVW.
