Weaning NH 1630 Shibaura engine off of ether

To me it just sounds like normal cold retarded timing. Usually, a hard starting engine with a correctly functioning fuel supply and glow plug system would point you next too the injectors. either way, with them out you can have them cleaned, flow tested and balanced. depending on the cost. Did you and the mechanic check the timing

We have not checked the timing (yet). I will note that I have replaced the glow plugs. The main fuse was blowing after attempting to restart the machine when the engine was hot or warm. So far, I have not had the main fuse blow again. I’m taking the injectors in to the diesel shop today on my way home from work.

The injectors were pop tested and cleaned while I waited. I got new washers for the top and bottom as well. They said that there were no issues.

I’ve ordered an oil analysis kit from Blackstone. The machine has only about 6 hours on it since the last oil change. We’ll see if it reveals anything of interest. If not, then I suppose we’ll just run it.

I received the results of the oil analysis today and have attached them... I called the lab to learn more since this is my first experience with an oil analysis. The person with whom I spoke suggested that the aluminum and iron numbers may be residual from the old oil which was in for an extended period of time, and the possibility of corrosion. There wasn't an hour reading on the old engine oil filter when I changed it, but there was a date/hour reading on the HST filter, which indicated the last service was 152 hours earlier, and then we know it sat for three or so years. There's no way of knowing if the engine oil was changed at the same time. The Blackstone rep. also said that we'd likely see chromium if there was a ring issue, and copper and lead if a bearing issue.

Thoughts on the results and next steps?

That is your baseline!
Now....just wait for another 100 hours, and test again.

Harbor Freight has an inexpensive kit to test thru gp's.. then they have the more expensive kit for both inj. AND gp's..
Anything over 300 psi will start a diesel engine.. but u really want to be way North of that.. anything lower & u have ether damage.

Yep, extended ether use will cause more damage than good and masks the real problem. Not familiar with this model but assume it is not an a one very old. If a tractor engine was designed for ether starting their will be a place to insert the cartridge and a activating valve. That is what an old diesel mechanic told me once. I agree compression test is vital to diagnosis.

I wanted to provide an update to this. I ended up taking the machine to an independent farm repair/diesel shop in August. They removed the head to get a good look at the top end of the engine. It was pristine other than the valves having some rust/pitting from sitting. They cleaned up the valves, properly adjusted them, and installed a new head gasket. The machine sounds better. We've put about 40 hours on it since this was done and it's been fine.

From your video tht sounds like a normal cold diesel engine. The 405psi cylinder would not worry me its still well within spec.

Plain and simple diesels do not like to start easy in very cold weather. It will never start as quick as a gas engine.

I think you found the problem. " It was pristine other than the valves having some rust/pitting from sitting. They cleaned up the valves, properly adjusted them, and installed a new head gasket." Reduced compression when cold can cause problems.
