Of course we do that first! I don't even need to go outside. But where we are the weather often arrives from over the ridge, so its not possible to see what's coming.

I know - I was just joking around. Weather man said rain tonight... well, it's raining at noon today.

For years I've used Weather Channel apps.

I've tried a few apps, one being dark sky, none of them seemed to worked well.

I use the weather bug app. It lists weather for my current location. So, if I'm traveling, it will update periodically.

Granted, it uses the closest weather reporting station to your location. At my current address, it's the local college a couple miles from the house. At my old home, it was the local high school 4 miles away.

I used it also, but it’s gotten so loaded up with advertising that I quit using it.

Interesting article about Dark Sky: It Changed How We Get the Weather. Meteorologists Hated It. It’s About to Disappear Forever.

Apparently their "rain in 10 minutes" type short term projection was driven by comparing radar pictures and projecting rather than running a metrological model. There are many disparaging quotes from meteorologists in the article. But it worked reasonably well for my area. From watching radar I think our rain clouds are roughly the same shape 30 minutes before they hit us as when they're over us. That's not so true in other parts of the country.

Best thing about Weather Bug for me is the lightning map showing how close the nearest strikes are.

It's really helpful in our new Southern Arizona home, especially during monsoon season.

I’ve had good luck with the AccuWeather app on my phone and their website from my home computer. Lets you set the default to the closest station (useful when traveling) or to a specific place, or to default to last location viewed.

Hourly forecasts go out several days. (You can get more from the premium version, but an hourly forecast more than a few days out is generally pretty worthless in our area.)

I've given up on a Fox weather app. Every day it's a crisis some where with a bomb cyclone or atmospheric river.
