Weather forcing people to move?

I didn't move because of the weather, I moved because of politics and living in a place that I felt was becoming more and more unsafe with more and more congestion. Weather played a big factor in deciding on moving to Texas. My first choices where somewhere in the Rocky Mountains. Wyoming, Montana and Colorado, but every time I found an area that I felt I could earn a living, I hesitated because of the weather. In Texas I found the political environment that allowed for a person to start a business and be able to put my energy into making it profitable instead of fighting government regulations all the time. I found a place where I could build what I wanted without permits or worrying about what somebody else felt I should do. Now I look back at where I'm from and wonder why I stayed there so long. I feel sorry for my friends there who feel trapped and not knowing how to get out from being a slave to their mortgage and spending their days fighting traffic and avoiding the dangerous places, while worrying about their kids and what is going to happen to them.

People are still moving here and as long as the politicians keep their noses out of things, life should continue to improve. My biggest fear is the State Government will give in to the Federal Government.

Well when a few more Obamacare/ Vt health connect bills come due a lot of Vermont's young people may become conservative well before the usual time. I see a glimmer of hope.

Vermont has always been a conservative state- until the southern New Englanders moved in and took over! But its core is conservative!

We have had 2 pretty stiff winters here in Michigan, and most of the north. I had 2 neighbor's move into town last year, they both bought condos. The winter was really the last straw for them, they just could not handle it anymore. And I have several friends that are talking about moving to Florida. Do you think there is going to be a big increase in folks moving south?

Florida is a great place for northerners to move to. You will love it. Virginia, not so much...LOL.

Sadly that hasn't been true sense the sixties. Once they reapportioned the state on a one man one vote rule for both house and senate the little rural towns have had no voice and Chittenden county (Burlington) has had full control of both houses. Too many college professors and Taxachusetts transplants up there to be balanced out by the few native Republican farmers left. A lot of those old farmers have sold the herd and now winter or live in Florida or Arizona.

We just came out of the coldest Feb. on record in my area of Me. . Some areas of Maine already have a record snow fall to boot , must be that global warming . My good friends and neighbor just sold out and they bought a place in Port charlotte Fl. . I look at his pictures with envy , or until Aug. comes and I might change my mind .

Two sorts of people in this world.

Those that like winter, and those that don't

<snip>
What is winter?
If winter is days with average lows below freezing my land in Vermont has winter from about November 7th to about April 13th. The lowest average minimum is 6 degrees for most of January.
My land in Mississippi has winter from December 21st to February 11th. And the lowest average minimum is 29 degrees.

What is summer?
If summer is days with average highs above 80 degrees Fahrenheit my land in Vermont has summer from about July 7th to about July 26th. And the average maximum on those days are all 81 degrees.
My land in Mississippi has summer from May 18th to Sept 26th. And most of August the average max is 91.

I think this cold weather is a liberal conspiracy to move liberals away from the north and populate the conservative south. :D

I've lived up north and down south. I've met folks in both areas who love their weather and hate their weather. As has been said, it seems to be a personality thing. Love it where I am... high enough and far enough north to have a real winter -but far enough south to not have brutal winters. We're far enough north and high enough to have mostly mild summers, but far enough south to have warmth long enough to enjoy the season. And fall and spring are fantastic.

I think the perfect setup is to find a small city or town that has the basics, but be within two hours of a big city. You have the best of both worlds. I am far enough out in the country to shoot guns without anyone really hearing, but within 20 minutes of a great hospital, all kinds of shopping, coffee houses and dozens of restaurants. Sure it's changing and development is rearing it's ugly head - but I'm past 70 and don't figure to see it get too bad before I check out to the tractor barn in the sky.

You have the right attitude to live a long, long time.
