But... Be VERY careful w/ the Spike. If you get it inside the drip ring of a tree you want to keep, it probably won't live. Spike will not kill persimmon, by the way.
I have some Princep that I use around old equipment, structures and other stuff that doesn't move. At a high enough rate it is a soil sterilizer. Once again, don't get it near anything you want to keep.

Get some of this: index

Understand though, that you'll probably have to retreat every year because seeds will be in the ground and blow in. Old used motor oil works too...

Garlon 4 works well on briars here in south Georgia.

I use Pramitol 25E. It is a bare ground herbicide. Nothing will grow for at least a year if you follow the directions on the label and you don't have to have a license to buy it. Here is a site where you can look at it. I buy it at Tractor Supply and also at my local farm & home store. This is by far the best bare ground product that I have ever used.

Bleach
This kills plants of instantly. I did a very small area and they shrivelled up quickly. It might work well with salt water as well.

Alcohol
This works well :D I used some cleaning thing based on methanol and the weeds shrivelled right up.

Diesel
This works as well as alcaohol. Oil does the same. Gas didn't work so well, I think it evaporated.

You could try some bleach on your briars and they should go away :D

(But I didn't tell you to do that :))

Any thoughts on what these substances might/will do sprayer components? I seem to recall that methanol (wood alky) never caught on for vehicle fuel as it had a habit of corroding/disintegrating fuel system components.

I'd like to find something to take care of our tumbleweeds. I like the idea of contacting the county extension office for advice.

another vote for pramitol. just be careful as it will also kill desirables. maybe look at roundup and surflan and a 24d. I remember as a kid crankin the ice cream maker, when done dad would take the salt brine and pore it on the cracks of the sidewalks, worked good until it rained, then would spread into the yard further and further with each rain. didn't bother him as much as grass in the sidewalk i guess as we did it every year.
an off topic question, well not really, but in the midwest and east as much salt as is used on the roads, how can their be anything growing in the borrow pits? and doesn't that work as baitin deer to the edge of the road? Ron

Instead of Roundup I buy Pronto from TSC at less than half the price. I use it with near 100% sucess on poison ivy, briars, brush, grass, or weeds. As others have said, mix using the suggested rates. If it's been dry, wait for a good soaking rain and then spray after a week when things begin to grow. some things will slowy die after weeks, but they do die and won't regrow except from seeds. Roundup does work slightly better, especially if it rains within hours after application.

Look for a generic round-up (something with glyphosate in it) and mix it with some surfactant (spreader-90 is what we use at work). and just for kicks and giggles throw some of a product called SelectMax in the mix. this is the mixture we spray on Round-up Ready Soybeans. the SelectMax is a grass killer that works on plants that are glyphosate resistant. thats the mix we use at work.

another product to use would be gramoxone. but i'm fairly certain that you need a license to buy it.
