Anytime I get on the tractor is work but it's the funnest work I ever do. The video was a spure of the moment thing, thought about doing it just before I finished mowing. The idea came to me when I was thinking about a conversation I had with a coworker on Friday, he did not have a full understanding about bush hogging so took the video to show him. Ah the beauty of modern technaligy.

I am in the same situation as you except retiring this year from the US Air Force. Couple of things I've been thinking about are: Hay farming, raising cattle and commercial mowing business but welcome other ideas from the folks in this forum as well. I want to have fun my next career, not to the Air Force has not been fun but it's time for a change. So come on you all give me and Golfgar4 some ideas that will put us on a tractor all day having fun. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I've been talking with a number of developers in our area, and there seems to be a need for someone to go around and mow/clean-up their empty lots. I've also spoken with a couple of realty offices and banks, and they seem interested in having someone to send out to mow lots also. I make it real clear that, at least to begin with, I don't want to do finish mowing. There's a gazillion (well, maybe only a bazillion /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif) guys doing that kind of work. I'm also looking at doing tilling, post hole drilling, and light excavation/loader work. I want to get a small dumptruck so that I can haul dirt/mulch/stone/rock/debris reasonably easily. I've even spoken with a couple of nurseries, and they might be interested in hiring an independent guy to do some of those small hauling jobs they get so that they don't have take a worker away from a crew for a short period of time.
Other sources of work I'm investigating would include hiring to individuals to haul in their mulch/stone etc. for landscaping projects they want to do themselves but don't have the equipment to haul the materials in. I've spoken with our Park department, and they would consider contracting to have some of the bike trails/jogging paths through our community mowed. I'd probably be able to do it for a little less on an hourly basis than what it would cost the City to do it.
To begin with, I'm looking at getting a 30 - 40 hp tractor with loader (probably a 4 n 1), a rotary mower, PHD, and a tiller. Of course, I'll need a trailer large enough to haul it. Probably a minimum of an 18', maybe a 20'. As I mentioned earlier, I'd like a small 1 ton dumptruck. I don't want to go so large as to need a CDL, but I also want more than one of those dump bodies in a pick-up truck. I might consider a dump trailer if I can find one large enough to haul the tractor, but for now, I'm just thinking of a regular (dovetail) trailer.
There's the basics of my ideas. All I need to do is to figure out how to pay for it all without having to take out a second mortgage!!

A relative of mine uses his 26 hp Cub Cadet CUT TLB (7260 or 7265, not sure) to do odd jobs for the city. The city will usually need his help getting into areas where their bigger machines cannot go. Maybe you could find some work along those lines? Plus, if you don't already have one, it will give you a good excuse to get a backhoe (and FEL if you don't have one) for the tractor! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

These are some great ideas. I am kinda thinking of starting out small and do one or two specific things like commercial mowing and bush hogging and branch out from there as I find out where money is to be made. Seems if I get to many irons in the fire then need more tractors, equipment, trailers, trucks and more people to give a paycheck. I have in mind 1 or 2 employees to start out with. I like the idea of cleaning up around developments when construction is completed, leveling the lot out, planting grass, trees ect. Anyhow keep the ideas coming I am liking it, somethings are being brought up that I had not considered.

The only ones I have seen are John Deere and Bush Hog with videos of their zero turn mowers. Can't think of anything better for them then an potential buyer being able ogle at a piece of equipment they were interested in going through it's paces. Sure would get the saliva glands pumping.
