I have a related question. I also have a weeping cherry tree, and some of the branches are growing skyward. Should they be cut off? I have tried to train them to weep, but they have grown too large for that. Any suggestions????? thanks Junk.....

From picture #3.... looks like a type a fungus. Possibly rust or blight. High humidity or moist wet conditions exacerbate the conditon. Good news, if it's a fungus, it's fairly easy to treat with a multi-purpose fungicide. The fungicide daconil (aka chlorothalonil) will stop it in it's tracks. The not so good news is.....it's only a temporary cure and will need to be retreated with daconil every 7-14 days for best results.

I agree - fungus. Once it is so widespread you will not be able to "cure" it this year. Preventative spraying will work next year, starting with bud opening and every 10-14 days

I would expect the tree to live. My crabapple tree gets similiar problems every late summer/fall - the leaves drop early, but it comes back gangbusters in the spring.

As shoppintractors stated, moist/humid conditions in the air will make the "infection" worse (especially in the spring), and drought will stress the tree to have the leaves drop earlier.

I have a hawthorne tree that's very susceptible (yearly) to the fungus. If I'm diligent and spray it in the spring it keeps the fungus more in check. I've never had the fungus kill a tree. The tree looks worse (leaves turn brown and fall off) as the season goes on. It comes back in the spring just like Docheb's. If I'm current with my yarden game plan I use the tree fertilizer spikes to try and give the tree a nutritional 'boost'.

This same fungus attacks our tomatoe plants. It starts at the ground and works it's way up the plant. We've gotten in the habit of removing the lower branches of the tomatoe plants early on and keeping the upper branches tied up as high off the ground as possible.
