Hello, not sure if this is the ideal forum to post my question in. I don't weld (yet) but I am thinking about bringing my old spring tooth harrow to a local machinist to attach a 3 point frame assembly from angle iron so I can use it like a landscape rake. Is this a typical work order for a welder in an agricultural area or is he going to look at me cross-eyed? How much should I expect it to cost? At a certain point it may be better to just buy a new landscape rake....

Apologies that I don't have any pictures, but the harrow frame is straight, has space to mount a 3 pt frame, and is made of good steel. The implement itself is not very heavy or long (IIRC 4x4 springs, about 42"W x 60"L)

Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

If you can dream it, it can be welded. Not sure a machinist is the best place to go but he will sure tell you if it is in his wheelhouse. You might do a quick look on craigslist to see if you are reinventing the wheel though. Good luck!

It'll work. Just need a welder.

Bring the new draw pins and top link pin with you so he knows what size holes to drill.

Thanks all. Will report back this week when I have a free minute to head over there.

I see ads on Craigslist for welders who will come to you. One of these guys might work a lot cheaper than a professional machine shop. He might even have a scrap structure he could weld onto your harrow. I would inquire in that realm first, then step up to a pro shop if needed. This isn't rocket surgery.

Agree with what's posted above.

one word of caution.. if you take it to a machinist.. it will likely be designed and made up like it's launching the space shuttle, and might cost as much. On the other hand.. if you take it to a competent welder.. it will likely work and not cost much.

You might price a generic 3 point carry all from Tractor supply and see if you could bolt it to the harrow frame yourself. Maybe even look at the $80 (with coupon) harbor freight quick hitch and see if it could be easily welded/bolted to the harrow.

Did you see the recent similar thread about lifting a chain harrow?

Here's my post in that thread. It links back to where I made a toolbar and lift mechanism for my qhitch. A couple of posters replied favorably.
