Welding a Fireplace Heatalator

I dont see how silicone will work on anything that has high heat, maybe on chimney parts, 600° comes quick and wood fire is hotter then that, just look at that heat distortion on your heatilator. Welding later over silicone will be harder when it already is hard to weld.

I hope you have CO sensors in the house if you are burning a fire with a crack in the inner side of the double wall shell.

I know you said you don’t smell anything but CO is odorless and deadly.

I had thought of that. No, I don't have a CO detector. If there isn't even a hint of smoke from a wood fire, why would there be CO? I never heard of CO detectors for wood burning appliances. Am I missing something? Thanks.

CO blends in the air so the sensors can be mounted anywhere. I use the type that plug into a 120V outlet. Simple, take them out of the packaging, put the backup battery in (if equipped) and plug them in.

The CO detectors look like a smoke detector. Installs like a smoke detector. Usually stocked on the same shelf at the stores. Prices range from 15 to 30 dollars usually. Well worth it if you have fireplace or any kind of gas burning appliances in the house.

Thanks. What a poorly put together article though. Firstly, a distinction should be made between wood burning fireplaces and otherwise. Too many articles out there with generalizations and no facts. How many people ACTUALLY died or became sick from C0 from a woodburning fireplace and what was the cause?

I guess I didn't poison myself when my chimney screen was 80% blocked despite the smoke that came into the house whenever the glass doors were opened.

The house isn't tight which I kind of like for air quality. And not another stupid piece of equipment running in the basement 24/7.

I am in the security business so if I come across a CO detector on sale, I may consider it, and in five years may actually get it hooked up!

I have. Although with wood burning stoves you also have the issues with the production of aerosol furans

I know an elderly gentleman who blew the doors off his fireplace when he inadvertently put his wifes discarded purse size aerosol hair spray can in the fireplace. But never heard of aerosol furans. Can you please elaborate on your experience?
