I have always been told that 7018 have to be stored in an oven to run correctly. They are really sensitive to moisture. I've used them before but I like a 7014 better.

I have a case of 7018 in the garage. Don't have a rod oven. I just put them on a baking sheet in the oven for a couple hours at 250 degrees before starting my project.

Yea. I haven't thought about that. I don't have an oven at the farm and usually don't have two hours to wait on my rods to dry out.

I understand where your coming from :) Farming is a get her done and move on to the next project :) Welder at my house is more of a hobby, and for the occasional repair on my implements or my neighbors lawn furniture  Bout the only time I use 7018 rods is when I'm building something new, and then they can bake while I'm cutting out the pieces.

The majority of the time it's 6011 or 6013 rods.
