Crack drilling is really only used in cast iron, due to it tendency to crack further while welding. The rounded hole helps relieve the stress and offers a termination point for the crack.

Don't drill it if it isn't cast.

I am not a "welder" but have seen a "fish plate" (diamond shaped) welded to cover the crack and leave two of the ends unwelded.

Well, how about they do not weld the plate 360 degrees; two opposite ends are left unwelded.

Well if you welded that fishplate on and than drilled some holes around,that should pretty much take care of it,,,:laughing:
