I bought a used machine and noticed recently that it has a cracked frame right before the front axle. I reckon that I tear down machine come winter, mig weld and fish plat weld over the crack. Does that sound good enough?

Make sure you use oval, or diamond shape fish plates. No 90-degree corners!

I am no welding expert
Me neither, I'm just a hobbyist!
Here are a couple good examples. Notice on the second picture how the welds are arced at the points of the fish plate?

That is on a excavator boom, a lot of stresses, and abuse on them!

Is that called a "handle bar" weld like a handle bar moustache?

Is that a crack in the lower left corner? Might need to address that also.

I was looking into getting a Hobart MIG welder, but want to wait until my building is up and wired into the house. I have used ESAB welders before, but they are pricey. Are Hobart any good? Any other models I should look at??

Deere, is that a C channel that is cracked? Whereabouts on your tractor is this crack?

Actually I am not sure, I will investigate tomorrow and take a few pics. Its located on the front left-hand side of the frame near the front axle.

Seems some idiot either snapped it from pulling something with the loader, the weld was bad to begin with or a combination of the two.

That Hobart is nice!... but I do not see myself welding that much to justify the price.

I got the cracked frame welded up, but noticed the front axle still moves when it should not. So that needs to be looked at when my concrete cures on my pole barn.

Paid someone that's been welding 35-years to do it and I will follow up with a fish plate later. The other side of the frame shows no cracking or visible stress.
