Welding project, anyone guess what it is?

Until you mentioned it went inside the house, I was going to guess it to be a sun dial for each time zone.

Now that you say it's inside the house, I'm thinking of either:
Framing for a bar (offset for stools). My main guess. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
Some kind of step wall.
Top framing for a wall that doesn't have an adequate connection point on top (ie. under the plenum for a basement wall).

Am I close?

I think it has to be something Lbrown59 contracted you to build...to hold all of his truck license plates! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Or if you paint it orange it might serve Ramon49 as something to hold all his complaints about his Kubota tractor...sure looks like it might be short of pegs for that though... /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

It's for hanging cabinets that are out over an island in the kitchen.

BTW: What do i win.

Come on man! The suspense is killing me! What is it? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
I would guess it is going to hold sheet rock in a vaulted ceiling....I don't know /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Yep that’s it. We have a winner. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif You get to be first in line when we try it out.

I built the steel frame so that all the support would be hidden. when it’s finished it should look as though the counter top is balanced on the top of the wall with nothing holding it there. After installing I put all my weight on the front bar of the frame and it doesn’t move at all, it’s plenty strong.

The attached picture showed the frame when we first installed it. No the big guy is not me, that’s my step son. He helps me on this project when he gets time off his job. for scale the top of the wood part of the wall is 45” and the big guy is 6’5” I mention that because he makes everything else look small.

Here is a view with sheet rock in place. Didn’t need green board but that’s what I had available.

The challenge with this project was not the welding in itself but finding some way to keep everything aligned during welding. I started working with a temporary welding table that I just threw together. A 6’ folding table and on top of that a couple large sheets of steel. I quickly realized it wasn’t flat enough.

At that point I had the side rails and all the cross pieces tacked in place. I knew if I just finished welding without locking everything in place on a flat plane, the metal would move every which way to the point that I would have a mess I’d never be able to fix.

I was stumped for a while until I stumbled on the solution. I mean I actually stumbled on the thing. there was an aluminum ladder that was constantly in the way at the building where I’ve been working so I had taken it home the day before and just set it down in the garage. So when I started looking for something long and straight to lock down the frame I was building, I tripped over the ladder, which annoyed me so I picked it up to move it and...........Hay!! this ill work! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

So the ladder and a bunch of clamps did the trick. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I sure do like your project. I've done a few of those. I like to build the base of cabinets (12" D) instead of a framed wall for added storage. Yours sure makes plumbing and wiring easy, not to mention keeping costs down.

woodlot

The way that wall is framed, the last post (closest to the camera) is a 4x4 that goes through the floor and is firmly attached to two floor joists to make it ridged. otherwise the wall would only be supported by the base cabinets. the way it's built it's already very strong even without the cabinets.
