Welding rates sky high? yes, no?

I remember in a factory I used to work in we got a job to weld a crack on front locomotive cover. It was aluminium and took those guys close to 3 days to finally weld it close.

Due to the size it kept cracking from corners - but for the customer it was still cheaper than replacement.

But it was a nice piece of crafstmaship what they were doing with it.

running a shop, we can't charge $120/hour, $60 is the most we manage to get.

as harve said, we lose money, when we stop to do a small job.
if i have a job that i can work at steady for 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. we get every minute paid for.
if someone comes in with a 15-20 minute job, we have to talk to them. figure out the problem. tell them how we'd fix it, how soon we can do it, what it'll cost, get thier name, and #. then usually they wanna know about what we are currently working on. there's about an extra 15 mins gone by, plus the time to do the job. then to call the customer. make the bill, and talk to them b4 they leave. soon we've lost an hour, of productive work, for a $10 job......

we're a small shop, in a rural area, so you have to take all customers. and sometimes it's 2-3 weeks till you can do thier work. right now, i have enough work on, till the end of summer. but still shoe horn the lil' guys work in.

quite often, your also gettin the advise, or opinion of a professional as well. normally, we can tell why something broke, and can fix the problem, that caused the break, or inform the customer why it did break.
