Wow, if you went into the fab I work at and called O2 an inert gas you probably would be walked out the door. N2, sure but not O2.

I agree. Or CO2. Inert gases like N2 AR and HE are actually toxic in that they disperse O2 in your lungs and in the right dose would need to be purged or you will die.

Counter guy could very well have been a stand in or substitute. May have been a new guy with no-one to ask. May have not known process or application so I give him a pass. I guess when a guy goes in to any store to buy, May want to bone up on the product a little as well prior to. I was an 8 year counter guy when I was coming up many years ago and I remember when I was new. Frightening as ****.

It is a little intimidating but having been a customer and later being the counter guy. What I hated the most as a customer was when the counter guy didn't know what you're talking about but fed you a load of BS trying to fake it. I have way more respect for someone saying they don't know rather than giving the wrong answer. When I didn't know, I'd say let me find someone who does. I was just browsing in a welding supply several years ago and a customer asked for 3/32" 6011. The counter idiot told him they didn't have any but had 6013. It's just one number different! Yeah, the number that means the most. I just shook my head in disbelief.

So true! I hate being B.S.'d. Having gone from mechanical engineering profession to tech sales in my career... I appreciate both sides of the coin but I know I could only sell something I believed in and knew the in's and out's of. I also know I would starve as a used car salesman.

That is my way also and it served me very well in my sales career and even more so when later I had my own businesses.

LOL, it once even got me fired.
I had to provide forecast for the upcoming year and that for Jan 1st. The 4th quarter results were not available so I had to create them going from the 3rd on.
Spent an entire week end doing so and then predicted based on a client to client basis.
Problem was every prediction and then some came to fruition and I exceeded all my estimates.
When they fired me they claimed that I had totally screwed up production.
\On the other hand maybe with all those sales they probably figured they could live another year without a rep and save money.
I later learned that it was their standard 'motus operendi'. (and they were a major fortune 500 Co.)

My first counter job was auto part during High School... it was Friday after school and 8 hours Saturday to start and then more in Summer.

My original job was to stock the shelves but a few times a customer would ask a question when the regulars were busy...

After a few months the Boss said he had received a few calls from customers about me... I was thinking what did I do... then he said they were complimentary saying I was helpful and knowledgeable...

After the first summer and I went back to school... customers would come in and ask for the kid or by my name... some would wait to Saturday... I liked having "My" own customers... I was 16.

We often had two parts or more with one being economy and one premium... often the premium was worth it... but sometimes the economy was a better buy... I would explain the difference and customers appreciated it...

If you are speaking to me, I live 22 miles from the nearest. In my life it has been acquired numerous times. It was Grady Welding supply, Merriam-Graves, Airgas, now Air Liquide. Next closest, a few miles farther is Maine Oxy, they acquired Northeast Welding, a one store business that popped up, then was acquired a couple years later. Other than on line, or delivery a week later, I don't really have choices.

Times have changed, or did I learn?????...... In my youth I could ask about an acetylene/oxygen set, I'd get a response that if I had to ask price, I couldn't afford, (they didn't know my buying power at 19 years of age was greater than today) Now, I ask about torches, they address me as sir, or the long term employees call me Bill, they research a question I might have. Airgas has always employed good people. It has always been their corporate attitude that offends me. I have accounts with numerous vendors. All start counting overdue as the day the monthly statement is mailed. Many give discounts for ten days or less payment. Airgas often sends the overdue notices before the statement. They make snotty phone calls if I buy a three dollar item on the first, but thirty days later, I haven't yet received the statement.

These days, Airgas will solve problems with newly purchased equipment. They have a welding savant who will come to me to resolve a problem. Nobody will ever like their attitude, but I can't fault their service. NO THEY WON'T TEACH YOU HOW.

No I'm not speaking to you, my post was to the OP..

The air we breath is about 78% Nitrogen. As a Respiratory Therapist(RRT), I use Heliox (70% helium/30% oxygen) all the time treating asthmatics and COPD exacerbation.
