I wouldn't have thought silver solder would be good for a butt joint like that? Not enough surface area? Remember, it is only a strip 3/16x1/4 that contacts. The gun digest I have that features cooper knives said he arc welded them, nothing more. That leaves a lot of room for speculation. I have heard arc welding to refer to all kinds of electric welding. Even if they used it in the normal sense (stick) that still doesn't narrow it down much. Only about 50,000 different electrode type/diameter/current options.

I'm not a knife expert but years ago I made a knife from a file and brazed a 1/4" bolt to the end and added many layers of 1/4" leather stacked 'til I had a grip. Sanding with a disk shaped the grip. Buffing and repeated coatings of linseed oil finished the grip.
I still have it and it is razor sharp and keeps its edge. I made the guard with 1/8" shaped brass and threaded a self locking nut on the end to hold the leather grip stack in place.
The brazed on grip rod has withstood many many outings, skinned moose and carved many walking sticks and opened many cans of food stuff.
Only down side is humidity leaves a rusty finish from dampness but that is a minor issue compared to the fine edge the blade keeps.
I also hand crafted the belt case from thick soft oiled leather that simply hangs from a wideish lace or strap. The case covers about 1/2 of the grip so that I don't need straps and snaps.
Since it sort of dangles from my belt, gravity keeps it in the holster ai all times.
