A guy starts a thread about yellow jackets and it winds up full of stories about bees and wasps, for which there is no comparison. You haven't been stung until you've wandered into a yellow jacket's nest.

Hint, hint. If you discover a YJ nest on your property and you would like to eliminate it without the use of pesticides or gasoline, at night, put some raw liver next to the hole. The aroma will draw the nearest skunk who will also discover the nest, and handily tear it to pieces, eating the contents in the process.
VERY interesting. Thanks for posting.

I don't think it would be wise to strike matches to gas that is about 15ft from a natural gas line!! Yeah, it's buried probably pretty deep, but still, just don't need to be tempting fate lol.
Gasoline is hugely effective as vapor. Just pour an ounce or two in at nite and cap the hole. Done.

I have learned that as you get older.........your body no longer tolerates the wasp or bee stings...........in decades past it never was a problem to get a few stingers the odd time...........but a couple years ago my tractor stirred up a few of the buggers and I got three stings on legs...........and again no reaction other than sore spots, but a couple weeks later I developed a bad case of Shingles and that was partly due to my immune system being compromised by the bee stings.
OOOO-O. Another reason to get the shot.

What makes you think that the YJ don't already know about this clever ploy? And when you go trapeseeing out to their hive they smell the liver coming and do a preemptive first air strike?!! Yeeeouch! :c(

Gas is my weapon of choice too!! Don't care if it is $3.09/gal either!! The vapors alone will kill them, but you get gas on them and they can't do nothing but die!

Last Saturday morning I went back to the gas line on the tractor with my cultivator and worked over a strip about 80yds long for the food plot, with part of it right beside where the YJ nest was at. Even though I could see no activity there (and it is capped off with a patio block) I still watched it closely every time I went by it lol. Just not taking any chances with them!

Someone mentioned using Sevin, I am sure that works but when there are 30-40 sentries standing guard at the entrance to the nest at 9:30pm, I would rather toss them a cup of gas from a few feet away. Forget trying to dust them with Sevin lol. Ya'll be safe out there!

What about diatomatious earth? That stuff works well with ants and other things like grubs. It's totally harmless to human s and animals. I've got a 50 lb bag of it I think I'll try.

Just had the exterminator out today to deal with two ground nests that were close to the house. One nest was easily accessible, but the other nest was next to my walkway and under a couple hosta plants. One of my dogs got nailed a few times while milling around this nest. Well the first nest was easily dispatched in a few minutes. The other nest was a little more challenging for the exterminator. Guess it was a big nest and tucked up under the sidewalk. He had his "bee suit" on but said the number of bees was overwhelming and forced him to make a hasty getaway. I was surprised to learn that he could still get stung even with the suit on. He may have to come back in a few days to dust the last nest again. I'm glad I didn't try to deal with these nests myself. I even forgot to ask what kind of bees they were - just assumed they were YJ's.

. . . I believe vinegar should help neutralize that strong base.

I've always used bleach. It seems to work pretty good (well, as good as anything else) on yellow jacket stings and chiggers.

It works on scorpion stings too. I was in the process of laying down under my pickup one night, and as my shoulder touched the ground, I got nailed by a scorpion. Lord in heaven, I HATE those things!

And, no, I wasn't drunk and bedding down for the night under my pickup. I was working on the trailer harness. Well, that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

:confused3: Little over a week ago I was out and about in the woods and came across this up in a tree and did not want to get to close. When the wife got home had her grab her cam and said follow me because I had something to show her.We got about 40 feet away and she started the cam so can any of you nest experts tell me what type of nest is this? Also we see all kinds of flying wasp from red to black and hornets with a white head but not sure if that is the bald head. I'm not sure if Alabama has the bald head hornet in this state.

Well, harmless maybe . . . just don't try to snort a line of it. If you do go for it, don't forget to post it on U-Tube.

Seriously, it's not good to breath the dust.
