These stories scare me. I just bought some adjoining property and have been clearing it a little at a time. I am semi allergic (one sting to the hand makes me swell to the shoulder) and a full nest attack could be fatal. I am thinking I should wait till the dead of winter to continue but the desire to get this land cleared is probably gonna win out over safety.

I avoided a hornet attack years ago. I had built a ground powered mower to pull behind my car and was mowing our roadway. When I completed the task and parked the mower I looked up in the rear view mirror to see the swarm of hornets attacking the mower. That was the very first time I used the mower and I credit it for saving me.

I have friends that work at Johnson Wax and they make the wasp and hornet spray. And yes they detuned it some because the employees were all developing nose bleeds at work.

We used to use a spray bottle of denatured alcohol and a lighter - - spray, flick you Bic, WOOMPH! There is a considerable amount of positive feedback and, dare I say, entertainment value, as the little buggers loose their wings and die in prodigious numbers. That said, this is a really dumb idea! There is risk of starting a fire by spraying too much alcohol on some innocent object or of spraying or leaking alcohol on oneself, Then, upon ignition, being hoist by one's own pitard.

Did I mention the entertainment value? :x)

Bumpern;

I have the Harbor Freight burner that attaches to propane tank. Propane Torch with Push Button Igniter

It does your alcohol / Bic lighter X 10,000. Yes, the entertainment value is priceless!

I have one of those HF weed burners too! But I'm not brave enough to use it on the eves of a house where the alcohol is brief and I'd guess subjects surrounding to a lower temperature - flame sort of flashes quickly. That HF burner fairly roars!

You need to get a fire proof pitard! :)

I think this might be a more viable alternative vs. the "electric wiener" thing.
