The viton float valve needle will have a rubber tip. If it sat through the Winter with gas in it I would replace the float valve and the pump diaphragm. Your troubles will be over. I think all those Vanguards have the viton needle or a rubber seat on the inlet valve body. Actually once you examine that Briggs carb you will be amazed at what a cheapo item it is.........

Yes it does have a rubber tip on the needle and yes this carb is cheap, simple but cheap. The 6 times I had it apart I would always inspect it to see if it was the cause, but the rubber tip always looks great, I will replace it if the problem comes back. When you say to replace the diaphragm in the pump, are you talking about the Mikuni fuel pump? I was told by the dealer that you cant replace the diaphragm, that you need to buy a new pump. That didn't make sense to me, there are only two bolts that hold the cover on, why cant you just replace the diaphragm? Maybe that's the reason that dealer went out of business.

Hmm Mikuni pump? All of the ones I have encountered have had the pump built right into the front of the carb. Just remove the cover and replace the diaphragm...I think it was only about $6? The little inlet valve is maybe $3-$4? I can't believe the repair people will tear these down and put them back together without replacing those items. Just because it looks OK does not make it so....

Re: well, once again......the 2166 can\'t run hot

well, got the call today from the dealer, they said they found the problem, which by the way, was one of the things I first pointed out the very first time I had it in. The guy asks me "did you have a grass fire in the front of the machine at all?" the reason he asked is because the wires running from the pto were melted. I had pointed this out to one of the guys in the shop when they were taking down the symptoms, and I asked him if it could be the culprit and he said no at the time.

I thought to myself...."now what kind of idiot to you take me for? I think that I would know if I had a grass fire under the hood of my brand new tractor!"

He said that it was grounding out and causing the fuel solenoid to shut down, causing it to kill. Ya know, if this is what the problem has been all along....it's enough to wanna pull out your teeth. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Can't blame you for wanting to do that. The good news is that after about an hour in the saddle on a nice hot day, you'll start to like that tractor all over again. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Look at it this way, the amount of time and energy you spent was still far less than a new tractor. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Re: well, once again......the 2166 can\'t run hot

Hmmmm.. that's odd it wasn't blowing a fuse due to the shorting PTO wiring /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif It must have been just a weak enough voltage leak to drop system voltage enough to de-energize the fuel cut off (anti-backfire) solenoid. Interesting. Any of the wiring up front is in a tough spot on the 2000+ series CC's as the exhaust system is right there. Hope they got it this time!
G/luck
