Well Pump Recommendation

i'm not 100% sure on what the difference is, one of those things i "use to knoe" and have forgotten..but the type of pump you have, pumps a lot more water than you get: it pumps water past the jet to suck more water in, "assuming" its 2 for one, for every 2 gallons that are pumped, you get one: with a submersible, whats pumped is what you get.

Thanks for all the suggestions and tips. A lot of excellent information in here.

One question...when a pump is listed as convertible does that refer to the voltage (120v or 240v)?

Shimon,
Convertible centrifugals can be used for both shallow or deep wells.
For less then 20 feet you don't need a jet. There will be a single line down to a basic foot valve. Same pump can be converted to a deep well with a push up jet down in the well and will need two lines. One line is suction ( usually 1.25") second line is pressure line (1") down to jet which is used to push the water up the suction line. The size of the jet depends on depth of well. The deeper the well the more pump discharge water must be sent back down to push water up the longer suction line.
He Haw is right on, you would be much better off with a sub pump then another centrifugal. As mentioned earlier, centrifugal pumps waste a lot of enegry pumping water in a circle. The deeper the well the more the waste.
Bottom line, the deeper the well the more reason for going with the sub pump.
Also, sub pumps a far less likely to freeze up on you in the winter.

An update....

I decided to go with a submersible pump since it seems like the best solution. When I pulled out the old piping going down the well I found the foot valve was a corroded hunk of rust so it was good timing. Also found the pressure tank had a leak in the bladder. The well turned out to be 30 feet deep with the water level at 17 feet. Got a Goulds submersible 240v pump and a new 80 gallon pressure tank. Also went to a 40/60 psi regulator so we have more water pressure now with no "dips" in the pressure as the pump turns on. Old pump will end up at the next garage sale.

Thanks again for the good advice!
