or, I should say, particulate. We are getting a lot of black particulate in our water. It is clogging up our appliance, faucet screens too often.
I'm thinking it is time to replace the well line, which I *think* is galvanized.

I am also thinking about a sediment pre-filter. It may be a year or two before I can replace the line.

Thoughts?

What is a decent, inexpensive filter that won't impact gpm or pressure? I dont care about poison in our water, so I am just looking for a sediment filter.

My well had a lot of black sand when I moved into the house 5 years ago, they put in a lot of water processing equipment in the pump house... the first thing in line before the pressure tank is a centrifugal sand separator that has an electric valve that purges the tank every so often (I think I have it set at 8 hours). That didn't stop the grey sludge that came with it and would plug up the filter elements after that every couple weeks, but everything is good now.

I'll try to go out to the pump house and after I get home and look at the components for ya...

is it black? does it look like rubber? could be the blatter on the well pressure tank, that was our issue

I would begin by getting a 1" whole house filter and maybe two in series. I would do that for sure if I had a country well
and is easy to install.
I had a problem with grit getting into the water softener until I did that.

If I had galvanized I would get rid of that first chance I had and replace with PEX tubing..

My definition of sediment is anything with a specific gravity greater than water and the sand was stopped with a sediment tank at our residence. I followed that with a common low cost American Plumber water filter and it cleaned the well water up very well.

Everyone on a water system would be surprised at the amount of particulate there is in the water they buy by the gallon. Just bought this house 2 years ago; it had a string type filter cartridge in line. Never thought much about it till all of a sudden we had no water volume. The filter was filled solid with black mud. Installed a new system with new standard cartridge with a clear shell and also added a carbon filter to remove any heavy metals and gases like chlorine. Have by passes and in and out gauges to maintain a watch on it. in 6 months now and it already has a coating of brown/black particulate. Probably will be an annual change out of the cartridges.

I use 2 filters on my well water, first is the larger style from GE, second is the smaller, use a 5micron pleated filter for the larger first stage and a 1-3 micron for the second smaller filter. Seems to work well but I get enough fine sediment that it's a monthly change out if we get a lot of rain. I also get some black sand in the first stage, I need to raise the pump sometime.

I pump lake water for household use and as such there is suspended fine particles in the water.
After a few tries with a variety of filters I followed some advice and installed a pool filter that simply used a fine nylon mesh to filter fine particles.

All the usual filter elements would clog within a week or two while the fine mesh 'pool filter' generally only needs cleaning every 5-6 months.(lower flow is my indicator)
Now all the sinks and sanitary bowls stay nice and clean while unfiltered they had a yellowish tint from the unfiltered water.

That suspended 'silt' would leave a yellowish deposit otherwise.

Only problem is pool filters use 1 1/2" plumbing so I had to adapt down to my 3/4" plumbing.

If U wish to go that route like I did, any store that sells pool supplies can help you.
