Larry, the only problem with seabees is that you had to be too close to the guys shootin' at you. I should have mentioned that aboard ship, the worst meal I ever at was better than C-rats. When it got really rough at sea, they'd put out bread and cold cuts in the chow line. If you were at battle stations, they would even bring around sandwiches.

Mark: The last conventional aircraft carrier will soon be decomissioned, the USS Kitty Hawk. For the guys in the firerooms and engine rooms, that can't come too quickly. God bless snipes! They had the worst job aboard ship and largely the most thankless.
My brother was in the Navy served on the USS Constellation during the Vietnam war, he left this life about 4 years ago he is missed every day, by Gods grace I will see him again.

As a former snipe (in the forgotten branch, the USCG) I have to somewhat disagree with it being the worst job. At least in the engine room you could count on the weather being the same (HOT!). Couldn't say the same for the deckies! Maybe it was because I spent most of my enlistment on an ocean-going buoy tender, but I was HAPPY where I was & wouldn't have swapped with a deckie for anything. Not only did they have to be out in any & ALL weather conditions, they had to deal with those stinky, smelly, mussel encrusted buoys, (up to) hundreds of feet of HEAVY chain, & sinkers weighing upwards of 50,000 lbs! At least below the heat & noise were a constant.

Wayne County, that's funny, cruel, but funny!

Last I heard, the US Army has more ships than the Navy does...

Boats yes, but not ships;)

Another bit of trivia for ya...The Navy has more aircraft than the Air Force!

The most backward detachment I ever did was to Lajes, Azores. The Army runs the ships and shipyard. The Navy has the airbase, The Air Force pretty much owns the base and runs security. The Marines...well...they pretty much just busted up the furniture every time they got liquored up (nothing unusual there), so 1 for 4 ain't bad.

One of the coolest bumper stickers I ever saw: "Fly Navy, Divers need the work!"

One of the coolest things I ever saw: June 1986, Nellis AFB, Las Vegas, Nevada. Saw an SR-71 take-off a couple hours before daylight. After watching it taxi out of the hangar, proceed to the runway and takeoff (lickety-split), I was in awe. I turned to an Air Force security guy and jokingly asked: Did you see that? All I got was "Nope...didn't see anything".

I had a brother-in-law that was in the Boy Scouts back in the 60's. He was on a field trip at some Air Force base in California. He had his trusty camera and was taking pictures. He said a big hangar opened and a "really cool airplane" was sitting inside, so he took a picture. Pretty quick an Air Force guy came over, opened the camera, pulled the film out and handed him the camera back. "Sorry kid, no pictures of that one allowed" was about all he got. He said later in life he figured out it was most likely an SR-71 or some early variant.:)

Use to watch the SR-71's and U-2's taxi in/out of the hangers at Osan AFB in South Korea and take off. Pretty cool. Navy plane capt's E-3's got a kick out of watching Air Force E-9's fuel their Navy aircraft for them.

On a NAS Cubi Point site... VRC-50, which supported VC-5... My squadron until I moved 300' down the steet to NAS Cubi Point AIMD. C-130 takes off from NAS Cubi Point, Philippines today, arrives YESTERDAY at Shemya AB in Alaska and gets back to Atsugi Japan tommorow! Twelve hour flight. Pretty unusal flight. Back to back tours of duty at NAS Cubi Point... I'm a lucky guy!
