Well Water System - How To Check Pressure Tank?

My theory is that you have lost the pre-charge in your pressure tank. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Your pressure tank and your pressure switch are out of wack. The switch may be able to be adjusted, the tank is likely shot. Get the largest precharge tank you can fit into the space, buy two if you can. Starting and stoping at those pressures/cycle time is sure to shorten the life of the pump. Press the schrader valve on top of the precharge tank, if water comes out, buy a new tank, it cannot be repaired.

Replace the pressure switch, first. It may not be able to "hold" when activated, and it's a lot cheaper and easier to replace than a bladder tank. If that doesn't work, you haven't lost much and can go on to the bladder tank.

/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gifHow can it do that? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Bird, don't you know that pressure works in reverse in Michigan? /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I thought you had to get south of the equator for that to happen. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

What, Michigan?

I thought it was our good friends in OZ, where the water swirls different ways down the drain, the pressure is backwards, they stand upside down on the planet, their climate is about six months behind and they are probably snoozing as I write this.

Oh, and don't they drive on the wrong side of the road too?

( To resurrect an old thread, I've noticed lately that my pump switch turns on and off a bit too much while the water is being used. My limits are set to 'On at 40psi' and 'Off at 60psi'. Lately the pump kicks on around 58psi and off at 56psi. If I run a garden hose at full flow the pump will cycle on and off constantly between these two limits. (approximately once every two seconds). I have my theory, what is yours? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif )

So, what did you figure out? I know that you've done something to fix it, because the constant click on - click off of the pump would have driven you batty by now.

Don, I poked at the relay a few times with a non-conductive tool and it seems to be working normally for the moment. I bought a new pressure switch and will install it friday or saturday. I have'nt had time to check the tank yet. If in doubt I will replace it. The tank is ten years old and is the 20gal variety. I would'nt mind sizing up the tank.
