First off....when it comes to submerged electrical stuff, I am very careful. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Second, your original pump motor sounds like it is a 240v, single phase motor. The replacement four wire sounds like it is probably a 3 phase motor with safety ground. I would think that there is no way to make the 3 phase work with your existing wiring. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Most importantly though...without being present at your well and looking at the wiring and at the pumps, any internet opinion is not going to be worth much in this situation. It is sort of like doing your doctoring via the internet....unless the doc can poke and prod and see, then the diagnosis stands a good chance of being wrong.

Not trying to rain on your parade....I can fully understand the predicament you are in.

I agree bout water and any type of voltage dont mix..thats what breakers are for /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
this 1 h.p motor is a 240 volt model not a 3 phase i jist called..i jist cant figger out why the fourth wire /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

   / WELLL!!! HELP!!! #14
the fourth wire should be green and is a ground, the red and black are the hot leads, the white is a common lead. at least this is the way i remember it. i had a four lead pump and converted to a three lead pump, i would caution you that your plumbing should be grounded as well, to make sure you dont pick up any voltage carried by the water. i went froma 1/2 hp to a 1hp without changing the wire or the fuses.

check out Alamo Water company in San antonio.
Don't know the web address, but it should be easy to find.
I buy most of my water purification components there.
I hope they can help you.

polecat, I enjoy and learn from reading your posts, however, just like typing in all caps is considered shouting (as well as being difficult to read), short hand and abbreviations are hard to read as well. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif I find myself having to read and then re-read what you've typed just to make sure I understand what you've written.

I use abbreviations when I use a chat/instant messaging service where brevity is almost a requirement and the time needed to translate a short message into English isn't a big time consumer. However, given the length of messages in a forum, this translation time can sometimes be onerous.

Just my $0.02. I know I, and others, can simply skip reading them, but I'd hate to see people miss out on the knowledge in your posts because of this. Again, just my $0.02.

Polecat.... I would be cautious about going too cheap on a well pump. I agree, you don't want to be spending $900 if you can spend $500... but remember that quality isn't free.

Personally, I would not opt for the $200 pump. My pump is 600 feet down, and I don't want to be draggin' that thing out more than once in a lifetime. I would rather spend a little more and get a better quality pump, than to have to replace the cheaper one in five years.
