Re: WE\'RE SUPERBOWL BOUND!!!

Well the game is over and it did not matter to me who won but, it is a shame when a championship game is decided by the official's. Almost every call against Seattle was not even a penalty and Big Ben was short by an inch or two. Just my opinion /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I think the pushoff in the first quarter and the blocking call were really the only bad calls of the night against Seattle.

As for the Ben TD, it looked to me like the tip of the ball crossed the line in mid-air -- before he was hit. That's all that's needed.

Re: WE\'RE SUPERBOWL BOUND!!!

The hold that called back the pass completion to the 1 was non-existent. Even Madden, who is as candid as they come, said so.

Regardless of whether one thinks the ball crossed the plane or not, the line judge plain messed up. IF...if he believes it crossed the plane, that had to happen before the QB hits the ground. When he hits the ground, the ball is clearly short by a tiny fraction, and he then sets it across the line..AFTER he is down. The line judge hesitates, begins to signal as if he'a going to spot the ball, runs in, THEN signals TD. Wrong. He either "sees" TD initially, or he doesn't see it at all. Nothing that happened once he starts to run in should have changed his mind about whether it was short, and thus needed to be spotted, or whether it broke the plane. To me, his behavior makes the call non-credible.

I have no dog in this fight....literally, I did not care who won. I thought the game was horribly refereed, from calls to spots, to you name it. But then I maintain that the overall quality of refereeing in the NFL has deteriorated dramatically the past 10 years or so.

Re: WE\'RE SUPERBOWL BOUND!!!

Although I am not a football official I do know a little about how these NFL guys operate. Every single call on every single play by every single official is reviewed and critiqued by the league officials, usually the monday and tuesday after the games. This tends to put tremendous pressure on these guys to get it right.

TV replay angles do not always give the exact same angle to a play that the official sees. These guys are trained to make split second decisions.

The officials also take a weekly rules refresher based on plays that happened the week before. The crew for last nights game were those officials who were the highest rated at their position for the entire season. You really have got to be consistently good to get to the Super Bowl.

Re: WE\'RE SUPERBOWL BOUND!!!

Too bad the ref's get the blame most of the time. I didn't think either team played very well with all the hype that they had. There were a few good plays, but not what I expected. I agree with Mad that the best ref's were there and the best teams were there, just remember its high speed judgement that is determining most of the calls on all plays whether its a ref or a player. My two cents worth.

Re: WE\'RE SUPERBOWL BOUND!!!

I thought the ball crossed the plane of the goal on the way down. I didn't think either team played like they did in the playoffs. It's too bad, watching them play at their peak would have been a lot more exciting. There was some bad calls, but Seattle screwed up too, with the poor clock management at the end of the first half and the interception at the goal line when they should have been taking the lead.

Re: WE\'RE SUPERBOWL BOUND!!!

The game was shown live, and in France I think it came on at midnight. It was very wierd to watch the game and hear the commentary all in French.

Particularly annoying was the play by play announcer who throughout the entire sportscast, called the "Pittsburg Steelers" the Pitts-burgers. As in Hamburger. Also I guess because the way their language is set up, it was not the Pittsburg Steelers is was the Steelers á PittsburGER. Grrrr.

One announce had it right but the other one pronounced it wrong all night. It reminded me of the time Wisconson was in the Rose Bowl. The announcer throughout the whole game pronounced WISconsin as WESconsin, and he was American.

for XL last night I fell asleep most of the way through the 3rd quarter and woke up the last 1:10 minutes of the game.

To bad for Seattle, I thought they were the better team initially, for the first quarter maybe. Congratualtions to Pittsburg, my their quarterback is big isn't he?

The announcer was probably from Chicago.
