WG24 stump grinder

Fedex Freight just delivered a WG24 stump grinder. Big truck, no liftgate. Fortunately the 1025R w/pallet forks was up to the task & lifted it off the trailer deck without a problem.

The cardboard is just a shroud around a steel framework & pallet. Everything arrived intact & undamaged.

It'll be a day or two before it gets completely assembled & tested. I'm already figuring on turning the upper frame portion into a table & adding casters to the bottom pallet portion to make a wheeled platform for storing the grinder when not in use.

I'll be waiting til next week to try it out. I did the top link bracket install so I could get a PTO shaft comparison measurement. The Carter & Sons EZ Hitch fit fine, so hookup was not a problem. The measurement from PTO shaft detent groove to implement detent groove was 33" for the 1025R with EZ Hitch. That would call for a 2" trim on the PTO shaft (you need a 35"+ measurement to avoid trimming).

Since the chipper is going to be used on both the 1025R & the 3038e (which uses Pat's Quick Hitch), I don't want to trim the shaft. I ordered another set of Pat's for the 1025R. That should show up Wednesday and add enough length to make trimming unnecessary.

Make sure that the "ears" make a good fit in the Pat's such that the grinder was little wiggle room....or ....it will be a source of excessive contortion.........Use some bushings if necessary. My WG24 fits on both my B2620 with a Quick Hitch (with bushings) and on the B2650 with PAT's and uses the same PTO shaft on both tractors.

Looks good! I've never really had a need for a SG, but I sure do like seeing the new equipment assembled and put to work. I'm sure happy with my PTO chipper from the same company. Happy grinding and follow up pictures please!

I have a very similar BaumaLight 1P24, and it works very well. I will say that you should be sure to read the Woodland Mills operating tips, particulary on which side of the stump to start grinding on... It makes a difference! Also keep the 3 point nice and tight on the width. Enjoy.

the metal crate makes a decent light duty welding and grinding table.
I broke off one of the zerks on the bearing up underneath and had to replace it, be careful with those.

Was pleased with the job mine did on a number of stumps. Did learn the hard way to tighten up the chains on the 3pt arms a bit so it didn't swing quite so much. Neck got a bit sore looking over the shoulder. I have a subcompact also, (TYM T254) plenty of power but you get shaken a bit by not having extra weight.

Getting closer to trying it out. I got the Pat's QH installed. That changed the shaft detent to shaft detent measurement from 33" to 37", so the PTO shaft is good as-is. I did go out & pick up a new torque wrench. My old one topped out at 150 ft/lb & I needed 160 to do the teeth so I picked up a 24" that does 75 - 250. None of the teeth were torqued to 160 except the 4 vertical ones. I marked each bolt end with a yellow paint stripe as I got them torqued to keep things straight. I also have a wired camera set up with a magnetic mount & 7" display that can attach to the hood with a suction mount, so that is ready as well. Still need to back off the clutch springs & slip the disk then retighten.

I found torquing the nuts with a wrench to be a PITA because you need to stop the flywheel from spinning.
I grabbed a torque limiting extension for use with an impact and for all the ones you can reach (all that don't require the supplied 90 degree adapter) while not perfect, it's a heck of a lot easier.

I ordered that same bar yesterday for future use. To stop the spin, I just put a spud wrench through the disk cutouts & let it catch on the guard. I have one tooth (or two?) I couldn't do because socket + wrench head were just a bit too much to fit under the guard. I didn't have a shorty socket or crow's foot that fit, so I ordered one of each that should show Thursday.

I'm not decided on where to mount the camera. It is wide angle & I was initially thinking about the PTO output shield. Mounting on the grinder frame is another option.
