Just a thought -- if this shaft is triangular and has just come apart, try it different ways -- the triangle is not the same on all sides and only fits together one way ( I have a shaft like that on my rotary mower)

No, the male and female parts were kind of shaped like a football (). Now, the male part is shaped like a football, and the female part is more oval - and the male part won't fit into........... Is this going to be sensored?

I just thought about the shapes as well. They only go together one way.
Thats because the yokes on the ends have to line up the same way. So if you have to take the new one apart to cut it down you have a 50 -50 chance of putting back together the first time if you are not paying attention. just rotate one of the shafts. My shafts on my mixer are rectangular and close in size. I never get it right the first time. They come apart all the time if the 3 point is up and I dump. Or maybe it is down and I dump, what ever. But is is strange that it deformed like that, I would have though it would have just pulled apart.

Bob,

Thanks for what you said. After a good night's sleep, and readin' what you wrote this morning, I am going back out there and dink around with the shaft and see if I can put it together. I was pretty frustrated with myself yesterday and may not of had the patience to examine the whole situation. I am sure I am not the only person who has been frustrated at feeling I have just "broke" a nice "toy" that belongs to someone else.

The shafts are built that way so the Ujoints are in time. You wouldn't think it would matter, but if you notice the ends of shafts, the bearing caps are always lined up. When sliding a shaft back together just take a look at the ends and match. It will be obvious if you are 180 out, the triangle will be opposite each other.

Hey Eagle -- been there -- felt stupid -- the more you describe it the more I think it to be the issue. When I first got the rotary mower and the shaft pulled apart I spent about five minutes trying to put it together before discovering the problem. Looks the same but ain't. --- course you could always switch from coffee to something more relaxing:eek:

Hey Eagle -- been there -- felt stupid --- course you could always switch from coffee to something more relaxing:eek:

It has been a rather "ruff" week for me, when it comes important things breaking. The other day I was roasting a second batch of green coffee beans. I saw what looked like too much smoke coming from the roaster. Sure nuf'! The tumbler, holding and turning the green beans in the roaster, jammed. The beans overheated, the roaster overheated, and the machine produced it's own . . . . . . meltdown!

The coffee roaster is still under warrantee, so I mailed that off to be replaced, and I ordered a new PTO shaft ($101.00). The shaft will be here next week, about the time the rainstorm arriving here leaves. So, at least next week I will get back to my cement project. In the mean time. . . . . ;)

Thanks again guys for your help!:)

Also another possibility, depending on how much overlap the two sections have, you can always cut off the deformed end(s) of the shaft, to get back to a good section.
