About a foot long.

My wife thought a badger.
OK I would agree with those who said a young woodchuck, in which case it probably won't be the last that you see. :(. Does it have rodent teeth?

My first thought was a muskrat or nutria- but the feet aren't webbed, and it lacks the long, furless tail.

It is a ground hog, I have killed many many of them and I know it is a ground hog.

Egon - you know, I wondered about a badger also. I've never seen a young badger and I don't know at what stage of their life they develop the typical badger coloration/markings. If it was a young badger - look out for the mama - she can tear you up like a rag doll.

Otherwise - it probably is a groundhog/woodchuck or the like.

Woodchuck/ground hog. My dog kills a half dozen of these a month (in the summer). No doubt about it.

Woodchuck. The first photo shows the two long incisors of a rodent. Badgers are a weasel, they have canine teeth like a cat.
