What antifreeze do I use.

Wet sleeve or dry sleeve, I've always thought that SCA's were in order. In all the years we've run diesels we've never had an issue with cavitation. Some engines were more prone to it than others. My Workmaster does not have sleeves and the owners manual does not call for SCA's, just regular ethylene glycol. My Ford 4610 SU did have known issues with cavitation in the earlier blocks so Ford calls for SCA's. It is a parent bore engine. So what to do. I'm gonna stick with regular anti-freeze in my tractor until it is time to flush and then decide what to do.

Google is an awesome tool.

HOAT=Hybrid Organic Acid/Additive Technology
OAT= Organic Acid/Additive Technology
SCA= Supplemental Coolant Additive
DCA= Diesel Coolant Additive

Needed to look up something at work today, and came across this:

Learning Coolant Fundamentals

Starting with my gas engines, I went to extended life coolants a long time ago. For not much extra money, you get coolant that lasts so much longer.

Above article lists some of the history of coolant development, and explains the thermal advantages of organic acid products. The end of the article notes that you need to confirm with the engine manufacturer if nitrites are required.

Green is about the most common antifreeze out there so I can't imagine youre not being able to find it. Not that it's the best just the most common. If you change types be sure to flush out the old stuff well.

Common "green antifreeze" has silicates. This is what will destroy your engine.

I didn't say it was good I just said it was the most common. In fact I don't use it in my truck or our car. The tractor still has whatever the factory put in it.

I got back recently from a little vacation, and a couple of you have PM'd me to answer this thread. I hesitate to do so, since the knowledge base already demonstrated in this thread is way beyond what I know about the actual chemistry of coolant. Just like oil threads, some of you guys really know your stuff!

What I see in the Mahindra manuals is that most if not all of the Mahindra tractors use a low silicate ethylene glycol with a max of 0.1% silicate. Even the mCRD models. Conoco Fleet, Shell ShellZone-LS, Texaco 2354/2055 are all mentioned as ok. We use a fleet approved low silicate ethylene glycol.

I do think proper coolant maintenance is often overlooked. The stuff wears out. This normal EG coolant should probably be changed yearly due to loss of effectiveness of the additives.

That doesn't mean there isn't a better coolant for these tractors. But this appears to meet specs. Probably just as important is changing it out regularly.

I'll listen in and see what the experts recommend. I do know that if you mix the wrong kind of coolants, you get a mess. I did this on a car once years ago. So if you change over to a different/better type coolant, I think you need to flush he system well first.
