What are the reasons for NOT using Cruise Control?

For me the main advantage of cc on the highway is to avoid speeding tickets. The cops set up their warning beepers on their radar to a certain speed, and so as long as you're under that, you won't get busted. That way you are safe from speeding tickets, and the cop in the radar trap can spend his/her time on his/her cell phone, surfing the web or whatever. I also find that it is very relaxing with cruise control on the trip of 3 to 4 hours up to the cottage. And you can pay much more attention to what is going on around you if you are not constantly glancing at the speedometer. All in all, an amazing invention!

Exactly how I see it.

WHOA! I guess I touched a few nerves.
But I'm standing my ground. The "Mountain Removal Project" is complete in North Dakota so I can't and wasn't talking about mountainous driving, towing, weather or any other of the obvious. Mainly daily morning/evening commute. Maybe, some people stare at their speedo to MAINTAIN speed, most don't. Phones, coffee, makeup, daydreaming, sleepiness, all distract. Slow for the curves, hills, onramps, yada yada. When you see the line of cars behind you turn their left blinkers on, . . . . DON'T speed up now. Too late. You already made them change lanes. Don't be offended either. Just go back to sleep.
I don't agree with "I am within MY right and the law" nonsense either. So you don't move over at onramps because "THEY need to yield" either? Its called being courteous. Stop trying to be a cop.

The problem (around here) with setting your cruise for 55mph behind someone going 52-58mph in a 55mph zone on a multilane highway is that while they are at 58mph (and are 2-3 carlengths in front of you), someone will pass you in the other lane, then cut in front of you. As such, when the lead car slows down to 52mph on the uphill and the car that cut in front of you punches their brakes (because they assumed that the lead car was going 58mph on average), you have to slow down to 45-50mph as do the 3 cars behind you and a knot appears in traffic all because the lead car couldn't be bothered to be courteous enough to go at a constant rate of speed.

On a convoy travelling at fifty miles per hour how fast does the last vehicle have to travell to maintain position?

Do you ever pretend while bored and driving that you are actually standing still and the world is speeding by? It's an interesting mind set.

Depends, how many vehicles in the convoy?

The last vehicle has to travel 49.75 MPH,,,, because the first vehicle has a speedometer that is .25 MPH out of calibration.

That's it in a nutshell, good description of the problem.

50 mph IF noone varies speed. If one person does, then it is a crapshoot
