What are the reasons for NOT using Cruise Control?

/ What are the reasons for NOT using Cruise Control? #41
I love to use my cruise control on the open highway and just sit back and maintain speed, but no, every couple of minutes an idiot passes me, pulls in front then slows down, making me cancel my cc, slow down, and wait for a chance to pass so we can play leap frog again. This irritates me so much that many times I just have to leave the cc off and control my speed behind the idiot as he speeds up and slows down just to keep my blood pressure down.

At my age I have finally learned that there are so many idiots on the road that if you let each one get under your skin then you are going to be scratching the rest of your life.

Heh. One of my mostd common drives is just 13 miles between Colfax wa and Pullman wa. Colfax is a bedroom community for Pullman and Washington State University (Go Cougs!!). Thus lots of traffic on the 2lane. I keep telling myself that driving 58 behind some nerd, or 65 which is the norml flow speed won't make a lick of difference time wise but it still doesn't keep my blood pressure down.

I like to use cruise control, only one problem, wife hates it,and complains when I use it.

I use it occasionally, but had one incident quite a few years ago that taught me two lessons. 1- Don't put a "kicker" on a CB, key the mike, and try to use cruise at the same time. 2 - Vans do not handle well when accelerating down mountain roads.

I don't understand. Why would she care if you use it? I don't think my wife ever uses the cruise control, but she's sure never cared that I do.

Idt isn't just hills. YOu probably don't think you do but you ARE constantaly varying speed even on flat ground. Mayi only be by a mile or two but that is enought to screw up poeple behind you.

I am a considerate driver and try not to cause problems for others on the road. For sure I don't think "it is their problem" when I screw up.

I maintain speed as best I can on flat. If it screws up people behind me....tough luck. They are probably following too close anyway. My car don't have cruise....deal with it. 100% their fault if it messes them up, it means they have their cruise set too fast. If I am at the upper end of my "fluctuating" speed, and they feel like they gotta keep it to 2-3 car length, tough ***** when I'm at the lower end of my "fluctuating" speed.

But either case, I have no issue maintaining speed with in 1/2 mile per hour on a straight and flat. TOO many people are dependent on cruise and don't know how to maintain speed without it......I am not one of them

We drive through Nevada Utah and Wyoming to visit a daughter in Cheyenne. Lot of open road. I put the cc on the speed limit. Have gone four hours without touching brake or gas pedal. Not unusual to have someone come up at 5-10 mph over the limit then stay right on my rear end for miles. What are they thinking.
That and sit on your left quarter panel.

I especially ' like it ' in the winter when everyone seems to want to drive grouped in a fur ball of vehicles on the ice and snow... I either speed up or slow down and get somewhere by myself if possible.

I was thinking about this thread while driving today. I had to run down to Colorado and I took the usual back way that avoids the interstate because I enjoy the boring drive looking for antelope. I had a colorado plate come up behind me and get up close and swing out to let me know they are there. I just maintain my speed on cruise control and she proceeds to back off about 50 yards and then speed right up to my bumper for about half an hour over and over. Finally turning left onto 71 I pull over to the side and give her the bird as she goes by. About 45 minutes later I see her flying up on my bumper just outside of Kimball. I guess she had gone through town instead of the bypass and was behind me but this was a 4 lane road so she blew on by. 10 minutes later I see her getting a greeting from the highway patrol.

City drivers are like cattle., they just follow the tail in front of them, allowing someone else to choose what speed they drive. Tailgating combined with all the texting while driving is a deadly combination. That is why you are seeing all these automatic braking/tailgating systems for people who struggle with driving skills.

I find very little application for it. Too much traffic in the city, and in the country, roads are pretty much deserted, but yes (the cattle) drive like their vehicles are chained together. Stupid! Cattle are probably smarter actually.

You are dreaming if you think you are maintaining a set speed within 1/2 mile. YOu are doing good to keep it within 3mph. I had many a trip border-to-border and coast to coasst back in the 50s/60s/70s in cars without CC. I KNOW I can do it within 3mph. lower than that is impossible without staring at the speedo full time.'

One does not have to be in "tailgate position" to get screwed up by an someone not using CC. I am usually back a 100 ft or more and someone not on CC will have my left thumb working constantly making up for it. Seems people no using it are also the ones who slow down on corners for no reason. Followed one the other day, slowing down from 60 to 54 on every corner, ones that could be taken a 90 without even straining.

Summasry. People nodt using CC on the open road are poor drivers.
