What are these used for?

I'm going with well drilling cause if you zoom in on all 3 pic, I dont see any where for bearing suports that would keep the screw supported. A screw conveyor would require hanger supports so the conveoyer trough would not get worn out by the rubbing of the screw.

If you have bearing supports on a screw conveyor, you'll get dead spots in the system where material builds up.

NOPE! the material will push it self to the next flight! I worked on screw conveyors for over 50 years moving all types of dry and wet materials. :)

There's the first new thing I'm learning today. The simple ones I have seen just have bearings at each end and rest in the trough. I certainly haven't worked on them for one year, let alone 50!

If you don't have a connecting joint then you dont need a carryer bering and the auger is stout enough to not sag down, also most augers will have clearance between it and the shell of about an inch. if the materal is of a consitance that it wants to follow or wrap around the screw then there will be wear strips (key stock) weled the lenth of the conveyor on the inside bottom. these augers if they had been mounted in a conveyor with out a bearing support would be tapered from the ends to the middle of the run! and I don't see an indecation of that. On a drill aplication it's the first bit piece that takes the abuse, the next sections are only lifting loose material so the flights can be made of lighter material.

Don't know what these augers were intended for but they don't appear to be strong or ridgid enough for drilling holes. Here is a pic of a 14" auger bit I have for comparison, much larger center section.

Pics 1 and 3 are of a Deere 14" auger (probably Danhauser sp?)
Pic 2 is the OP's bit.

I see you have them listed for sale on Craig's List. Let us know what you get for them, if you don't mind.

yes...the info here has been very helpful - sent pictures to people who work with screw conveyors and all of them said that's what they were - but most are offered as a complete system so still not sure of the value. I also listed them on eBay and elsewhere. will post the result if they sell.....thanks to all....

That's a screw conveyor section not a drill auger. We used them at a previous job as screw conveyors, no bearings in the middle, just at the end & was usually a thrust bearing not a support, used a 2 HP motor with a wormscrew 100:1 gear reducer. We lined the trough with 1/2" UHMW plastic and just let them wear into it and when they wore through the bottom we'd weld on a plate and put in new UHMW liners and away they went.

thanks for that confirmation! where would you think might be a good place to offer it for sale? Is there a main web site that potential users frequent to find used equipment? any suggestions would be appreciated. bryan

Although I don't have fifty years of experience, I have built and maintained lots
of screw flights. Wall thickness is quite thin in the pipe, I would say a grain screw flight would be a suitable application. The picture of the auger also shows a double helix, which helps to self center the auger and remove material quicker. Have you tried Iron search for posting them.
