You need to dig out the loam so that your bed will have some base. If you just dump gravel on top of loam, you will be buried up to your car roof in mud come April. Best to hire a dozer. Dump in some good bank run gravel and finish off with a few inches of crushed gravel.

Also consider geotextiles as part of the driveway base. This stuff is not cheap, but it is lots cheaper than piling in tons and tons of gravel. Do a web search on "road geotextiles". It's pretty amazing what the stuff can do, particularly where the existing soil/base is not very good.
