Grading What attachment to tackle brittle old asphalt

Hey, Im a newbie tractor owner and im not sure what attachment to use for a job on my driveway. I have patches of old brittle asphalt that Id like to remove. Wondering if a box blade is a proper implement for the job? Ill upload a picture and hopefully get some advice!!

I would dig them out with a shovel and put them in the FEL. If they’re really big, i’d use a backhoe.

I’m not sure what good dragging a blade over them would do except for knocking off the high spots.

A box blade might work if you can lower the scarifiers enough to rip up the patches. Are you wanting to remove all the old asphalt or just some small patches of it. If just a small area so as not to disturb the remainder, a backhoe might be best.

If it's old deteriorated asphalt box blade & rippers work with small tractor. You might also be able to get the loader cutting edge under the asphalt and peel it off.

If you have to purchase a box blade try the bucket first.

Have you been at this property long enough to know it is/was a paved drive?
To me, your pic looks like millings and not an old paved surface, and that's pretty typical of what they look like. Tight packed areas with loose, gravelly areas as well.

My FEL and Backhoe made mince meat out of my driveway and with no teeth on the FEL

Once you hook it it all breaks up pretty easy.
At least mine did and I did not want it too at the time.

I use my forks to break it up, then scoop it up with FEL.

I壇 like to remove all the old asphalt chunks so that I can box blade the entire driveway and try to smooth it out. It seems brittle enough that the teeth would rip it up. Thanks!

There is a video on YouTube:Tarter Extreme Challenge Part 2: Tiller. They use one of their tillers to chew up old asphalt. Some of their videos are hilarious, they do some outrageous things with their equipment.

Teeth on a backhoe or excavator bucket. Pound it into pieces then scoop it up and load in a dump truck/trailer.

PTO rototiller running in the direction to lift up the chunks. Wait for rainy weather to keep the dust down. I wore down he teeth a bit but they needed to be replaced anyways. Ignore the noise.

I'm wondering - - PTO driven rototiller. Will it chop up those larger chunks of bonded asphalt such that the chewed up surface can simply be graded and rolled smooth. Seems to be a real bummer if you would loose the value of all that old asphalt.

Hey bud,

I've done exactly what you are pondering - box blade and old asphalt. If you have a smaller tractor then you can just lower one or two rippers on the box blade to get a smaller bite. Get a tip of the ripper up under the asphalt (might take a few tries/passes) then you'll be off to the races. It'll peel right up quite easily, most likely. Then as soon as you can, switch to the loader to start scooping up bigger pieces. Ideally you would break up the asphalt and re-use it after you re-graded the substrate.
