I use John Deere PLUS-50. It's SAE 15W-40.

all of our diesels have Shell Rotella 15w 40 in them. Why? Well, dad used it for decades in Over the Road trucks, thousands of hours in farm tractors, hundreds of thousands of miles in diesel pickups, you can get practically anywhere (I have even seen it at 7-11). And it is reasonably priced. I have seen a lot of hype about synthetics, blends, metal PPM numbers, and I just don't see it making HUGE differences in engine longevity. I will probably get flamed for that remark, but, hey, you asked for opinions and that's mine. Best bet if you are unsure.... check with the dealer/owner's manual and run what they suggest. Whatever helps you sleep at night.

Yup, there is a lot of hype out there but again you get what you pay for. I for one do not base my purchasing of an item solely on its availability. That for me does not justify the decision since they are important questions I would like to know before purchasing. Shell Rotella is a good oil (when compared to group 1 thru some 3) but if also depends on what important factors in the oil you care about. I for one could not use a group 3 in my autos nor would I want to. Also do not want low VI 141, HTHS of 3.70 and ash in my oil. But again that is me. Also just look at the un-used oil analysis and you then see what you get from the start. For me price is no object since oil, at any price, is cheap in the big picture.

I agree, if you do not know what direction to go in, use the manual. Later on once you start gaining more insight you will know what oils are better then others.
