what can be added to fuel filter when fuel is gelled?

How do the VW's and truck diesels prevent jelling? I buy my diesel 5 gal at a time from local Hess station. I called them to verify they sell winter blend, they assured me they do. Yet their fuel jelled and shut down my tractor, yet my friend has a diesel VW with no problems and doesn't add non-gelling additive.

We had a fuel filter freeze up on the BX2660 a couple of weeks back. I parked it in the shop overnight (unheated shop but it blocks most of the wind) with a 500watt floodlight pointed up at the filter/pump and dumped a dose of Power Service 911 in to the tank the next evening. It started right up and has been fine ever since.
As a preventative measure, I stopped at our Kubota dealer and picked up a set of fuel filters for all three of our tractors. That way if we have a problem in the future, we can grab a filter off of the shelf and go.

VWs do gel, Dad and the neighbor used to run 80s VWs for many years growing up and they ran into gelling issues in the winter if they didn't treat their fuel. Does your friend park his VW inside perhaps? IIRC, they have a tank return, so they are dumping any extra (warm) fuel back into the fuel tank so if he parks inside, the fuel may stay warm enough not to gel.
