Black plastic under pea gravel gives it a natural look and if any weeds do start are easily pulled from the gravel..

If you have gutters on your pole barn weed killer will work fine but if you do not, the rain running off you your roof will cut trenches in the dirt and may cause problems.

Landscape cloth or plastic covered with rock is only a temporary fix. It may stop weeds or grass from growing up through it but it will still allow seeds to filter into the rock as well as the dust or dirt that gets in there and then you have the same thing as before. Been there. Round up or vegetation killer or even the salt mix are easy to apply and work as well. With or without the fabric barriers you will find yourself spraying or trimming sooner or later.

I like the idea of a 2ft concrete barrier. I did this around my cabin. A good slope drains water away from building and prevents dirt from splashing up on siding. Drive on the concrete while mowing. Plus it seems to keep all sorts of critters from burrowing around the perimeter. I put lava rock around my house....looked nice for a couple years, but with all my trees it started filling with sticks, twigs, leaves and them darn helicopter looking seeds from the maples. Tried cleaning with gas powered vacuum but collected more lava than leaves. And I just hate the sound of my blower trying to mulch rocks! Roundup sounds like the easiest and quickest solution in my mind.
